FORUM HELP SERIES
FILE: MSGSYS.HLP
REV : 11/07/84
HOW TO USE THE FORUM MESSAGE SYSTEM
This help file assumes you are in command mode and goes thru a brief
session of reading and leaving messages.

Enter selection or H for help:
If you select option 1, (L)eave a message, you first be prompted for the
address of the message:
To:
You may address the message with just the name of the recipient, but
it's best to use the User ID in addition to the name. If the user ID is
not included the message won't be marked for the other user as
"waiting". Messages addressed to "All" are just fine and can be used if
you are asking a general question.
Next you'll be prompted for the following:
Subject:
Enter anything you think is descriptive of the contents of your message.
The next step is to simply enter your message. If you are using FILGE
as your default editor, you should read FILGE.HLP for further
information on that editor's commands. The following assumes that you
are using the default Forum editor.
You'll now be prompted for the message itself:
Enter your message. Use a blank line or control-Z to end message.
1:
Enter your message text. You may put up to 80 characters on one line
before you hit a carriage return, but it's best to put about 70 or so
characters on each line in case you decide to insert a word or two later
on. Hit enter on a blank line (or Ctrl-Z) to end the message.
You'll now get the following "Leave options:" prompt:
Leave options:
1 (S) Store the message <-- Stores the message
2 (SU) Store Unformatted <-- Also stores the message, but it used
primarily with the FILGE editor.
3 (C) Continue entering text <-- Continue where you left off
4 (A) Abort the Leave function <-- Abort the message
5 (L) List the message <-- List the message and include line numbers
6 (R) Replace a line <-- Replace a complete line of text. You will
be prompted for the line number so it's
best to <L>ist it first.
7 (D) Delete a line <-- Delete a line. You will be prompted for
the line number.
Enter selection or H for help:
Enter 1 to (S)tore the message or use the other commands to edit the
message. Additional commands and instructions are available to by
entering H<elp>.
When you <S>tore the message you will be prompted for the the section
and be given the list of section names (example):
(0) General Information
(1) Spreadsheet
(2) Graphics
(3) Database Management
(4) Macro Language
(5) Business/Financial
(6) Scientific/Engineering
(7) Utilities
(8) User Groups
Enter the section number that you think the message belongs in.
Option number 3 from the main "Function menu: is the <R>ead <N>ew
message option and will display any messages that were left since your
last Forum session. Option 2, <R>ead messages will also display
messages, but you are prompted for the message number. New messages are
not automatic.
When you select option 2 or 3 you will be presented with the first
message and will be presented with the following menu:
Read Option menu:
1 (UA) Use address to send
2 (RE) Reply to current message
3 (T) Return to Function menu
Option 1, the <U>se <A>ddress command, will let you send a message to
the name and user ID of the sender (the From: member) of the message you
just read and allows you to change the Subject:.
Option 2, the <RE>ply command, allows you to REply to the message. It's
addressed to the user ID of the sender of the message (same as UA), but
the Subject: cannot be changed.
Option 3 returns you to the top Forum "Function menu:". To read the
next message just hit enter and the next message will be displayed.
One of the most useful Forum commands is the RTN (<R>ead <T>hread <N>ew)
command. The RTN command will retrieve messages in a logical,
conversation, sequence. Messages are "chained" together based upon the
message being replied to. A typical chain, or "thread" on the Subject:
"Word Processing" might look something like this:
Msg #1
__________________|___________________
| |
Msg #2 Msg #3
__________|_________
| |
Msg #5 Msg #6
_______|_______
| |
Msg #7 Msg #8
Of course, in the real world the messages wouldn't be numbered
sequentially, so a normal <R>ead <N>ew would not put the messages in a
logical sequence. Rather they would probably be intersperced with other
messages. By the time you got to the last message on a subject you
might have forgotten what the original message was about!
The RTN command would retrieve the messages in the following sequence:
#1,#2,#3,#5,#7,#8,#6
You can, of course, use the REply option to reply to any of the messages
in the thread.
You can use the RTN command from the top "Function menu:" prompt. Just
enter RTN then <enter>
